On the shelf above the serving counter there is a can that sits among the daily paraphernalia. It came in a food drive from the Postal Workers, wrapped in a note that reads: “I know this is too few, really I am sorry but I am an international student and sometimes I don’t have food for myself because it is too expensive for me to live and study in US. Sincerely, Justo.”  This can remind us to treasure the Gifts we receive, and the Compassion they represent.

Dear Haley House,

During a parents' weekend visit to my daughter, a group of parents and students went to dinner Saturday evening at a restaurant near Faneuil Hall.   While we waited outside for a table, a rather foul smelling man came into the area and tried to hustle some money.  He was probably drunk, surely hungry, and probably homeless.  We all succeeded in ignoring him, and went in to a festive dinner.   He was still there when we came out a few hours later.

We all know that if we gave him money he would buy wine or whiskey.   We would be funding the addiction, not the man.  But, in my view, this is not a good reason to do nothing.  So this contribution is my way of sharing our meal with him.  I'll never know if he gets to have a meal on me, but I hope so.

In any case, he presented the face of God to me--to us.  In the final event, he will learn that. God bless you in your ministry to restore human dignity to the homeless of Boston.

Sincerely,
George
